Here we take a look at recent developments in the lithium ion battery supply chain in China, followed with details of Benchmark’s upcoming field trip.
Benchmark Minerals’ China Lithium Field Trip 2019 field trip could not be timelier as China’s role in the lithium ion battery supply chain becomes increasingly prominent.
For the first time in 2018, China became a major exporter of lithium carbonate, with exports up over six-times to 11,131 tonnes. Over the same period imports were down 20%, showing China’s increasing self-sufficiency in the lithium carbonate market.
China also saw exports of lithium hydroxide increase by 40%, which went largely to Asian counterparts and major battery consumers South Korea and Japan.
As hard-rock lithium continues to be the primary feedstock for lithium hydroxide, greater spodumene output saw China increase its supply by around 20,000 tonnes in 2018.
This ramp up in new hydroxide capacities could be a warning sign for the market about the impact of new spodumene supplies into Chinese conversion capacities in 2019. If all producers were to operate at full capacity this year, then we would see production of over 800k of spodumene concentrate from 2018’s newcomers alone.
Despite this wave of new feedstock supplies, investment in conversion facility expansions has recently slowed, with only tier-1 producers providing firm timelines. Low prices following China’s lithium carbonate price declines in 2018 are stalling access to capital for many producers.
It is with this backdrop and the expansions in China’s battery output, which during 2018 stood at 70.6 GWh, that Benchmark will be hosting its annual China Lithium Field Trip – exploring the supply chain for new spodumene supplies through to lithium chemicals.
Spodumene converter field trip, Sichuan & Jiangxi, 27-31 May 2019
Benchmark Mineral Intelligence is pleased to announce that this year’s China Lithium Field Trip will be held in Sichuan and Jiangxi provinces from 27-31 May 2019.
The trip will be focussed on spodumene conversion facilities and provide exclusive access to some of the country’s leading lithium producers.
Companies included on the field trip include:
- Yahua Group
- General Lithium
- Jiangxi Special Motor
- Ganfeng Lithium
- Yinli New Energy
- …and more
The trip will be lead by Benchmark analysts and feature meetings, presentations and networking with some of China’s leading lithium companies and government officials.
