UK warns on gigafactories as Britishvolt signs Posco deal

The UK must significantly increase the number of domestic battery gigafactories if it is to meet its climate change targets, an official report warned, as startup Britishvolt signed a deal with South Korea’s Posco to shore up supplies of battery materials.

To minimise the risk of electric vehicle automakers moving overseas, the UK needs 140 gigawatt hours of capacity in domestic gigafactories by 2040, a report published this week by the UK Climate Change Committee said. This will require significant investment as only 68 GWh has been announced up to 2028, it said.
